EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored botanical illustration showcases the captivating beauty of Iris paradoxa, a native purple iris from the Caucasus region and northern Persia. The illustration was meticulously drawn by Matilda Smith and expertly lithographed by John Nugent Fitch for the prestigious Curtiss Botanical Magazine, published by L. Reeve & Co in 1889. Matilda Smith (1854-1926) was a talented artist and the primary contributor to the Curtiss Botanical Magazine from 1887 to 1920, creating over 2,300 illustrations. Smith was a second cousin and pupil of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, a renowned botanist and the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The Iris paradoxa, with its striking purple hue and intricate patterns, is a testament to the natural wonders of the Caucasus and northern Persia. The illustration provides a detailed and accurate representation of the plant's various parts, from its elegant rhizome to its delicate petals. The artistry and attention to detail are evident in the delicate shading and intricate veining on the leaves and petals. Botanical illustrations such as this one were essential for scientific research and documentation during the late 19th century. They allowed botanists and horticulturists to identify and study plant species from around the world, expanding our knowledge of the natural world. Today, these illustrations serve as beautiful records of the natural history of the past and remind us of the importance of preserving and appreciating the diversity of plant life.
