Alice Ashby Grosvenor Guest Ivor Ledger Lieutenant Vicereine Viscountess Wimborne
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, newly appointed Vicereine of Ireland, Viscountess Lady Alice Wimborne (nee Grosvenor), is seen with her son Ivor, later 2nd Viscount Wimborne, following the announcement of her husband's appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1915. At the time of this image, Lady Alice was previously known as Lady Ashby St. Ledger, and prior to that, as the Hon. Mrs. Ivor Guest. The Vicereine, dressed in an elegant Victorian-era hat and ornate, flowing costume, exudes an air of grace and poise. Her son, Ivor, stands beside her, smartly dressed in a suit and bowler hat, looking proudly at his mother. The occasion marks a significant moment in Irish history, as Lord Wimborne succeeded Lord Aberdeen in the role of Lord Lieutenant, the British monarch's representative in the country. Lady Alice Wimborne, born on July 28, 1881, was the daughter of the 1st Earl of Belper and Lady Constance Bulwer-Lytton. She married Ivor Guest, later 1st Viscount Wimborne, in 1902. Her husband's father, 1st Viscount Wimborne, passed away in 1914, and Ivor inherited the title and the role of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1915. Lady Alice served as the Vicereine until her husband's death in 1929. She passed away on March 28, 1948. This photograph captures a moment in time, showcasing the elegance and tradition of the role of the Vicereine of Ireland during the early 20th century. The image is a testament to the historical significance of the appointment and the important role that Lady Alice Wimborne played in representing the British monarchy in Ireland during a pivotal period in the country's history.
