EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of resilience and camaraderie among twenty military hospital patients of Quex Park VAD Hospital in 1917. The group stands united outside the front door of Quex House, dressed in their distinctive hospital blues uniforms. Each man wears a blue jacket and trousers made of wool material, lined with white light flannel, a crisp white shirt, and a red tie. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, opened on 15 October 1914, and provided care to wounded soldiers during World War I. The hospital was commanded by Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex Park. The patients' unwavering determination to recover is palpable in this image, captured during the hospital's eight-year tenure, which closed on 31 January 1919.
