EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, titled "Fossilien," is an exquisite representation of various extinct marine organisms, meticulously curated from Dr. Fr. Rolles' Geology and Paleontology section in Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert's Natural History publication. The illustration, published by Schreiber in Munich in 1886, showcases an array of fossils that once inhabited our ancient oceans. At the center of the image, a tubeworm, identified as Serpulaflagellum, is depicted with its elongated, tubular body and delicate, feathery appendages. The tubeworm is surrounded by an intriguing assortment of extinct species. To the left, a dragonfly, Libellula, with its large, transparent wings and slender body, appears poised for flight, defying the notion that insects were exclusively terrestrial creatures. A lobster, Eryonarctiformis, is depicted in the upper right corner, its robust claws and segmented body reminiscent of its modern-day counterparts. Below the lobster, a fish, Aspidorhynchus, with its elongated, eel-like body and distinctive dorsal fin, swims gracefully through the water. Another fish, Pycnodusrhombus, is shown in the lower left corner, its armored body and large, triangular pectoral fins contrasting with the delicate forms of the other organisms. Lastly, a Tegagonolepis, with its elongated, spiky body and large, fang-like teeth, represents the predatory nature of the ancient marine ecosystem. This stunning chromolithograph, a testament to the rich history of mineralogy and paleontology, offers a glimpse into the diverse and fascinating world of extinct marine life. Dr. Fr. Rolles' meticulous curation and Schreiber's masterful illustration techniques bring these ancient organisms back to life, inviting us to marvel at the wonders of our planet's geological past.
