EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment captured in 1949, the Enola Gay, the iconic Superfortress bomber that carried the atomic bomb "Little Boy" during the first nuclear attack in war, is presented to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. The logbook of the aircraft is being handed over from Major-General Curtis LeMay's deputy, Major-General Joseph O'Donnell (right), to Mr. C. Mittman (left) of the Smithsonian Institution. The crew members of the mission, Colonel Paul Tibbets (pilot, center left), and Major Robert A. Ferebee (bombardier, center right), are also present for the occasion. The Enola Gay, named after Tibbets' mother, was a B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. The mission marked a turning point in World War II and the history of warfare. The presentation of the Enola Gay to the Smithsonian Institution marked the beginning of its preservation as a significant historical artifact. Colonel Paul Tibbets, a decorated military pilot, led the mission with precision and bravery, making him a controversial figure in history. Major Ferebee, the bombardier, ensured the bomb was dropped accurately on its target. Their roles in the mission were pivotal in bringing an end to the war. The presentation of the Enola Gay to the Smithsonian Institution was a significant event in the preservation of American military history. The aircraft and its crew members played a crucial role in shaping the course of history, and their legacy continues to be studied and remembered.
