Born on January 31, 1773, Augustus was the youngest surviving son of the monarch who reigned from 1760 to 1820. His mother was Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the king's consort. However, their bond was strained after George's accession to the throne in 1820, and Augustus's behavior became increasingly erratic. He was known for his extravagant lifestyle, which included numerous love affairs and a scandalous marriage to a commoner, Lady Constance Villiers. Despite his personal troubles, Augustus continued to serve his country in various capacities. He was a colonel in the Royal Horse Guards and served as the Governor of Windsor Castle from 1814 to 1824. In 1824, he was created Duke of Sussex, and he became the first royal patron of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
