Virgin Crowned by an Angel, 1520. Creator: Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)
Virgin Crowned by an Angel, 1520. The boundary between heaven and earth is obscured in this engraving as an angel descends to crown the Virgin with a simple diadem. Although she is plainly dressed and sits on a simple wooden bench, Durer portrays Mary as the Queen of Heaven. Her direct gaze communicates her role as an intermediary with God for the sake of humankind. Like his Virgin with the Swaddled Child of the same year, Durer employed a halo emitting dense striations of light to emphasize the Virgins holiness. He considered the two part of a set of three engravings and gave several away during his journey to the Netherlands from 1520 to 1521

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Virgin Crowned by an Angel, 1520" created by the renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer, we are transported to a realm where the boundary between heaven and earth becomes indistinct. The engraving depicts a moment of divine intervention as an angel gracefully descends from above to crown the Virgin Mary with a simple diadem. Despite her plain attire and humble wooden bench, Dürer masterfully portrays Mary as the Queen of Heaven. The direct gaze of Mary communicates her sacred role as an intermediary between God and humanity. She stands as a symbol of hope and salvation for all mankind. To emphasize her holiness, Dürer employs his signature technique of using dense striations of light emanating from a halo surrounding her head. This engraving is part of a set that includes another masterpiece called "Virgin with the Swaddled Child". During his journey to the Netherlands in 1520-1521, Dürer generously gifted several copies of these engravings. This particular piece showcases his exceptional skill in capturing spiritual depth through intricate details and profound symbolism. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this artwork exemplifies the essence of Renaissance artistry while honoring Germany's rich cultural heritage. As viewers engage with this image, they are invited to contemplate their own connection to divinity and reflect on Mary's significant role in religious history.
