Madame Desire Raoul-Rochette, 1830. Creator: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French

Madame Desire Raoul-Rochette, 1830. Ingres became adept at making portrait drawings in graphite when he lived in Rome and needed the income they provided. After finally achieving public success in Paris, however, he made such works only as gifts for friends. He drew this sheet for the sitters husband, a famous archaeologist, to whom the work is dedicated at the lower right. Ingress technical mastery is fully evident in this portrait, which shows no evidence of erasure or correction. Madame Raoul-Rochette, born Antoinette-Claude Houdon, was the youngest daughter of Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), one of the most important French sculptors of the 18th century. Always attentive to fashion, Ingres shows the sitter here in day-wear, sporting a redingote (a coat open down the front) and a dress with long gigot or leg-of-mutton sleeves, stylishly enormous at the top

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print, titled "Madame Desire Raoul-Rochette, 1830" is a masterpiece created by the renowned French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Ingres was widely recognized for his exceptional talent in graphite portrait drawings during his time in Rome, where he relied on them to sustain himself financially. However, after achieving great success and acclaim in Paris, he exclusively produced such works as gifts for close friends. In this particular artwork dedicated to Madame Raoul-Rochette's husband, an esteemed archaeologist, Ingres showcases his technical mastery with remarkable precision. The portrait exudes a sense of flawlessness as there are no visible signs of erasure or correction. Madame Raoul-Rochette herself was born Antoinette-Claude Houdon and hailed from a family deeply rooted in the arts. Her father was none other than Jean-Antoine Houdon, one of France's most significant sculptors during the 18th century. Ingres pays meticulous attention to detail by presenting Madame Raoul-Rochette adorned in fashionable day-wear attire. She dons a redingote - an open-front coat - along with a dress featuring long gigot sleeves that were stylishly voluminous at the top. This exquisite portrait print captures not only Madame Raoul-Rochette's beauty but also serves as a testament to Ingres' artistic brilliance and dedication to perfectionism. It now resides within the collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art and is brought to us courtesy of Heritage Art/Heritage Images.
