The "Helena Sloman" Steam-Ship, 1850. This splendid screw steamer was built at the works of Messrs. T. and W. Pim, engineers...and is intended for passenger traffic between [Hamburg] and New York. She is the first of a line of steamers designed for the conveyance of emigrants from Germany to the United States; which, considering the great number that annually leave their Fatherland for the shores of America, will probably become equally extensive and important. She was...the largest screw steamer that has been built at Hull...She is propelled by two engines of 80 horse-power each...and the steam is supplied by tubular boilers on a new construction, patented by her builders...The model and rig of the Helena Sloman are calculated equally for steaming and sailing; and her performance has proved her to be a first-rate sea-boat'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the Helena Sloman Steam-Ship, the first of a new line of passenger steamers designed for the transatlantic journey between Hamburg and New York, as it sets sail in 1850. Built at the renowned T. and W. Pim engineering works in Hull, England, the Helena Sloman was the largest screw steamer constructed at the time in the port city. With a pair of powerful 80 horse-power engines and tubular boilers on a new patented construction, this vessel was a technological marvel of the Victorian era. The Helena Sloman was intended for the conveyance of emigrants from Germany to the United States, a significant demographic shift that would see millions make the journey across the Atlantic in the coming decades. The ship's design was unique in that it offered the best of both worlds: the efficiency and speed of steam power, combined with the ability to sail when necessary, making it an exceptional sea-going vessel. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, showcases the Helena Sloman's impressive features, including her distinctive funnel and elegant rigging. The ship's successful performance on the transatlantic route would pave the way for an extensive and important steamship industry, revolutionizing the way people and goods were transported across the Atlantic Ocean. This print, a testament to the ingenuity and progress of the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the world of maritime transportation during a time of significant change and innovation.
