Cathedral from Corso Francesco, Milan, 1857. Creator: Leon Gerard (French)
Cathedral from Corso Francesco, Milan, 1857. While little is known of the life of the Parisian amateur photographer Leon Gerard, his photographs give some indication as to his travels. In 1857 he visited Nuremberg, Bamberg, the Rhine Valley, Switzerland, northern Italy and Loire-et-Cher in France. Working with waxed paper negatives and albumen prints, he produced images with a sfumato effect, prefiguring the pictorialists. In Cathedral from Corso Francesco, Milan, we are presented with the bustle of a busy street leading to the marvelous late Gothic Milan Cathedral, which here shimmers in an effervescence and almost disappears before the eye. Exhibiting his travel photographs in 1861, Gerard was praised by the eminent art critic Ernst Lacan for creating works which " distinguish themselves by a harmonious aspect, a sharpness of detail that stops just short of being cold, a transparency of tone that allows one to peer into areas of deepest shadow, and skillfully rendered aerial perspective."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Cathedral from Corso Francesco, Milan, 1857" takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Milan during the mid-19th century. The creator of this mesmerizing image is Leon Gerard, a Parisian amateur photographer whose life remains largely unknown. However, his photographs provide valuable insights into his extensive travels. In 1857, Gerard embarked on a journey that took him through various European destinations such as Nuremberg, Bamberg, the Rhine Valley, Switzerland, northern Italy and Loire-et-Cher in France. Employing waxed paper negatives and albumen prints techniques, he achieved a unique sfumato effect that foreshadowed the work of later pictorialists. The photograph captures the vibrant energy of Corso Francesco street leading towards the magnificent late Gothic Milan Cathedral. Through Gerard's lens, we witness an ethereal transformation as the cathedral seems to shimmer and almost dissolve before our eyes. When Gerard exhibited his travel photographs in 1861, they garnered praise from renowned art critic Ernst Lacan. Lacan commended Gerard for creating works distinguished by their harmonious aspect and sharpness of detail that delicately balances warmth with coolness. The transparency of tones allows viewers to peer into even the deepest shadows while skillfully rendered aerial perspective adds depth to each composition. This remarkable print offers us a glimpse into both history and artistic innovation—a testament to Leon Gerard's talent as an early pioneer in photography.
