EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Andre Jacques Garnerin, a French aeronaut who made history as the first parachutist. Dating back to around 1800, this image showcases Garnerin's pioneering spirit and daring nature. Born in 1769, Garnerin served as a balloon inspector in the French Army during the late 18th century. However, it was his groundbreaking parachute jump from a free-flying balloon in Paris in 1797 that truly propelled him into fame. From an astonishing height of 3200 feet, he gracefully descended using his innovative parachute design. Garnerin's contributions to aviation were not limited to this extraordinary feat alone; he went on to become the first regular parachutist known at that time. Collaborating with his brother Jean-Baptiste-Olivier Garnerin on various projects, Andre continued pushing boundaries and exploring new possibilities within their field. This portrait offers us a glimpse into the life of this renowned scientist and physicist whose work revolutionized aerial exploration. With determination etched upon his profiled face, we witness an individual dedicated to advancing human understanding of flight. The presence of flags suggests national pride associated with Garnerin's achievements - representing France as both his birthplace and where many of these groundbreaking endeavors took place. Preserved through time by The Connoisseur magazine in August 1910, this monochrome illustration serves as a powerful reminder of Andre Jacques Garnerin's indelible mark on history.
