EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful photograph captures the harsh reality of child labor in America during the early 20th century. Taken in May 1911 by Lewis Hine, it depicts R. L. Witt toiling away on the railroad while his three oldest children work at the Roanoke Cotton Mills in Roanoke, Virginia. In this poignant image, Mr. Witt stands tall and determined, wearing worn-out overalls and a suit jacket that speaks volumes about his working-class status. His face bears traces of exhaustion mixed with determination as he supports his family through backbreaking labor. Meanwhile, his three eldest children can be seen beside him - a boy and two girls - all barefooted and dressed in tattered clothing. Their young faces reflect both innocence lost too soon and resilience beyond their years. The setting is an impoverished rural area, evident from the modest house's porch where they stand for this portrait. The sepia tones add a sense of nostalgia to this turn-of-the-century scene but also serve as a reminder of the struggles faced by countless families during this era. Lewis Hine's photograph serves as a stark reminder of the exploitation endured by many working-class families at that time. It sheds light on the urgent need for social reform to protect vulnerable individuals like these children who were forced into labor instead of enjoying their childhoods.
