New York Skyline: Partial Blackout after Hurricane Sandy

The skyline of lower Manhattan, as seen from Exchange Place, is mostly in darkness except for the Goldman Sachs building after a preventive power outage caused by giant storm Sandy, in New York October 30, 2012. Millions of people in the eastern United States awoke on Tuesday to flooded homes, fallen trees and widespread power outages caused by Sandy, which swamped New York Citys subway system and submerged streets in Manhattans financial district. More than two-thirds of the U.S. East Coasts refining capacity was shut down and fuel pipelines idled due to Hurricane Sandy. Early assessments show the regions biggest plants may have escaped without major damage. REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy as it plunged New York City into darkness. The skyline of lower Manhattan, usually illuminated with a myriad of lights, is eerily shrouded in partial blackout. Only the iconic Goldman Sachs building stands defiantly amidst the gloom, its bright glow serving as a symbol of resilience. Taken from Exchange Place, this image showcases the devastating impact of one of the largest storms to hit the eastern United States. Millions woke up to flooded homes and fallen trees, but it was the widespread power outages that truly showcased Sandy's destructive force. The city's subway system became submerged, and streets in Manhattan's financial district were transformed into waterways. As night fell on October 30th, 2012, this photograph captured not only physical darkness but also a sense of uncertainty and vulnerability. It serves as a reminder that even towering skyscrapers can be humbled by nature's wrath. Despite these challenges, early assessments provided some relief - major damage seemed to have been avoided at the region's biggest plants. However, more than two-thirds of East Coast refining capacity had been shut down due to Sandy’s fury. This powerful image by Eduardo Munoz for Reuters encapsulates both devastation and hope; reminding us that even in moments when darkness surrounds us physically or metaphorically - there are always beacons shining through to guide us forward towards recovery and renewal.
