EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a unique scene at the market of Canh Nau village, located 40 km west of Hanoi. In this image, slaughtered rats are prominently displayed for sale, showcasing the unconventional culinary traditions of the area. Known as the "rat meat village". Canh Nau has gained notoriety for its consumption of rat meat alongside more common meats like pork, beef, and chicken. Once considered a result of poverty in the past, eating rats has now become a special dish enjoyed by locals at the end of every month on the lunar calendar. The photograph reveals that an average of one hundred kilograms of rat meat is sold daily in this village alone. The composition highlights both curiosity and repulsion as viewers observe these unrecognizable roasted rodents laid out on plates. It prompts contemplation about human-animal relationships and our diverse dietary practices across different cultures. Nguyen Huy Kham's lens skillfully captures this peculiar aspect of Vietnamese cuisine while also shedding light on how people creatively adapt to their environment and utilize available resources. This thought-provoking image invites us to reflect upon our own perceptions regarding food choices and challenges preconceived notions about what is deemed acceptable or taboo in various societies worldwide.
