An American bison (bison bison) walks with her new-born calf in the grasslands of the Janos Biosphere Reserve in Janos, in Chihuahua state, May 16, 2014. The bison is one of 300 endangered species in Mexico and fundamental for the recovery of the Chihuahan Desert grasslands according to the director of the El Uno Ecological Reserve. Bison are an essential part of the ecosystem in supporting populations of other species in the reserve. Bison break the ground with their step and allow plants to grow, promote water filtration and keep the grass at a height perfect for other species like the prairie dog to thrive. As part of the five-year old Bison Reintroduction Project by The Nature Conservancy, NGOs, universities and government agencies, eight more adult bison, five females and three males, just arrived from New Mexico and were released in Janos, totalling now 61 bison in the reserve. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a majestic American bison gracefully walks alongside her adorable newborn calf in the vast grasslands of the Janos Biosphere Reserve in Chihuahua state, Mexico. Dated May 16,2014, this image beautifully captures the essence of these endangered creatures and their vital role in preserving the Chihuahan Desert ecosystem. The director of the El Uno Ecological Reserve emphasizes that bison are crucial for the recovery of these grasslands as they play a fundamental part in supporting other species within the reserve. With each powerful step they take, bison break ground and create opportunities for plant growth while promoting water filtration. Additionally, their grazing habits help maintain an optimal grass height that allows other species like prairie dogs to thrive. This particular photograph is significant because it showcases a momentous event - eight more adult bison have just arrived from New Mexico as part of The Nature Conservancy's Bison Reintroduction Project. Among them are five females and three males who will join the existing population of 61 bison already residing in Janos. The picture serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect endangered species like these American bison. It highlights not only their beauty but also their critical contribution to maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity within fragile ecosystems such as those found in Janos Biosphere Reserve.
