Combination picture shows the phases of an annular solar eclipse as seen from Segovia

This combination picture of five pictures shows the phases of an annular solar eclipse as seen from Segovia in central Spain October 3, 2005. An annular eclipse differs from a total eclipse in that the moon appears too small to completely cover the sun. As a result, the moon is surrounded by an intensely brilliant ring or annulus formed by the outer perimeter of the suns disk. The last annular eclipse visible from Spain took place on the 1st of April 1764 and the next one will occur on the 26th of January 2028. REUTERS/Victor Fraile - RP2DSFHZDWa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing phases of an annular solar eclipse, as observed from Segovia in central Spain on October 3,2005. Composed of five individual pictures skillfully combined into one frame, it offers a remarkable visual narrative of this celestial phenomenon. Unlike a total eclipse where the moon completely obscures the sun, an annular eclipse presents a unique spectacle. In this image, we witness the moon's silhouette appearing slightly smaller than the sun's disk, leaving a luminous ring or annulus around its edges. The intensity and brilliance emanating from this radiant ring create an awe-inspiring contrast against the darkened sky. Such occurrences are rare and hold great significance for astronomers and enthusiasts alike. It is worth noting that Spain had not witnessed an annular eclipse since April 1st, 1764 before this event took place in 2005. The next opportunity to witness such splendor will grace Spanish skies on January 26th, 2028. Photographer Victor Fraile masterfully captures this celestial dance between Earth's natural satellite and our life-giving star. Through his lens, he immortalizes nature's grandeur while reminding us of our humble place within the vast cosmos. This extraordinary photograph serves as both a testament to human curiosity about our universe and a reminder of its timeless beauty that continues to captivate us all.
