TWO BOATS NAVIGATE IN THE SEA NEAR EASTER ISLAND
Two boats navigate in the sea near Easter Island, 4, 000 Km (2, 400
miles) west of Santiago, October 30, 2003. The ancestors of residents
of Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui, carved and mounted the
huge stone head statues staring out to sea that the island is famous
for. Though the island currently belongs to Chile, islanders are
pressuring the government to grant them autonomy, like France did with
Tahiti. NO RIGHTS CLEARANCES OR PERMISSIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS IMAGE REUTERS/Carlos Barria PP03110101

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of Easter Island, located 4,000 km west of Santiago. The image showcases two boats gracefully navigating through the crystal-clear waters surrounding this remote island paradise. As the vessels glide across the sea, they provide a stark contrast to the famous stone head statues that stand tall on land. The ancestors of Rapa Nui, as the residents are known locally, meticulously carved and erected these monumental stone heads that have become synonymous with Easter Island's identity. With their enigmatic gazes fixed upon the vast ocean expanse, these statues evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue. While Easter Island currently falls under Chilean jurisdiction, there is an increasing desire among its inhabitants for autonomy similar to what France granted Tahiti. This aspiration for self-governance reflects their deep-rooted connection to this unique island and its rich cultural heritage. Through Carlos Barria's lens, we are transported to this far-flung corner of the world where nature's splendor meets ancient history. The tranquil scene captured in this photograph invites us to contemplate both the timeless allure of Easter Island and its people's ongoing quest for independence.
