Stars are seen in the night sky over Kukenan and Roraima mounts near the Tec Camp
Stars are seen in the night sky over Kukenan (L) and Roraima mounts near the Tec Camp, near Venezuelas border with Brazil January 14, 2015. A mysterious table-topped mountain on the Venezuela-Brazil border that perplexed 19th century explorers and inspired " The Lost World" novel is attracting ever more modern-day adventurers. Once impenetrable to all but the local Pemon indigenous people, now several thousand trekkers a year make the six-day hike across Venezuelas savannah, through rivers, and up a narrow path that scales Mount Roraimas 600-meter cliff-faces. While that is a help to Venezuelas tottering tourism industry and brings revenues to local communities, it is also scattering a prehistoric landscape with unwanted litter. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking beauty of the night sky over Kukenan and Roraima mounts near the Tec Camp, located on Venezuela's border with Brazil. The stars shine brightly against the dark canvas, illuminating these majestic table-topped mountains that have intrigued explorers for centuries. It was this very landscape that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write his famous novel "The Lost World". Once inaccessible to all but the local Pemon indigenous people, Mount Roraima now attracts thousands of adventurous trekkers each year. These modern-day explorers embark on a challenging six-day hike across Venezuela's savannah, rivers, and up narrow paths scaling Mount Roraima's towering 600-meter cliff-faces. While this influx of visitors brings much-needed revenue to local communities and bolsters Venezuela's struggling tourism industry, it also poses a threat to the pristine prehistoric landscape. Unwanted litter left behind by hikers is slowly tarnishing this natural wonder. Photographer Carlos Garcia Rawlins expertly captured this scene using a slow exposure technique, allowing us to fully appreciate both the grandeur of nature and its vulnerability in our hands. This image serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect and preserve such extraordinary places for future generations to enjoy.
