VIEW OF THE TRADITIONAL LANDSGEMEINDE IN THE CANTON OF GLARUS

View of the tradional 'Landsgemeinde' on the town square of Glarus,
Switzerland, May 4, 2003 with 'Mount Glaernisch' in background. Glarus is
one of only two cantons in Switzerland still to use the 'Landsgemeinde',
ancient embodiment of Swiss direct democracy in which citizens gather once a
year to vote in cantonal affairs by raising their hands. On Sunday, the
people of Glarus rejected the motion to raise taxes with a strong show of
hands. NO RIGHTS CLEARANCES OR PERMISSIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS IMAGE REUTERS/Siggi Bucher SIB/HM/

The Cheviot Hills are seen looking north west towards the England-Scotland border Featured Landscapes Print

The Cheviot Hills are seen looking north west towards the England-Scotland border

The Cheviot Hills are seen looking north west towards the England-Scotland border from Hadrian's Wall near Hexham in Northumberland August 24, 2013. Hadrian's Wall is a structure built in Roman times, marking the boundary of the Roman province of Britannia and separating it from territory to the north, much of which lies in present-day Scotland. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Signs of ancient conflict - from centuries-old fortifications to historic battlefields - score the landscape around the English-Scottish border. But many living in the region lead lives straddling both sides, and express practical concerns about the possibility of a more formal split between the two nations in the event of a yes vote in next year's referendum on Scottish independence, which will be held on September 18, 2014. Stars are seen in the night sky over Kukenan and Roraima mounts near the Tec Camp

Stars are seen in the night sky over Kukenan (L) and Roraima mounts near the Tec Camp, near Venezuela's border with Brazil January 14, 2015. A mysterious table-topped mountain on the Venezuela-Brazil border that perplexed 19th century explorers and inspired "The Lost World" novel is attracting ever more modern-day adventurers. Once impenetrable to all but the local Pemon indigenous people, now several thousand trekkers a year make the six-day hike across Venezuela's savannah, through rivers, and up a narrow path that scales Mount Roraima's 600-meter cliff-faces. While that is a help to Venezuela's tottering tourism industry and brings revenues to local communities, it is also scattering a prehistoric landscape with unwanted litter.
