People release sky lanterns to celebrate the traditional Chinese Sky Lantern Festival in Pingsi, Taipei County, February 7, 2009. Believers from Taiwan, Japan and Thailand gathered on Saturday to release sky lanterns as a form of prayer for good luck and blessings. According to the elders of Pingsi, the tradition of releasing lanterns began during the Ching Dynasty when bands of outlaws frequently raided villages around Pingsi, forcing local residents to seek refuge in the mountains. The lanterns were signals used by the village watchmen to inform the refugees that their houses were safe again. REUTERS/Nicky Loh (TAIWAN)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, titled "GF2E5270YFL01" we witness a mesmerizing scene from the traditional Chinese Sky Lantern Festival in Pingsi, Taipei County. The image transports us to February 7,2009, where believers from Taiwan, Japan, and Thailand have gathered together to partake in a profound act of celebration and prayer. As the sun sets on this auspicious day, countless sky lanterns fill the night sky like twinkling stars. Each lantern carries with it the hopes and dreams of those who release them - prayers for good luck and blessings that transcend borders and cultures. The origins of this enchanting tradition can be traced back to the Ching Dynasty when villages around Pingsi faced constant threats from marauding outlaws. Faced with such adversity, local residents sought refuge in the mountains while village watchmen lit these very lanterns as signals. These radiant beacons served as messages of reassurance to their fellow villagers that it was safe once again to return home. Through Nicky Loh's lens, we are granted a glimpse into an ancient ritual that unites people across time and space. It is a testament to humanity's enduring spirit - our innate desire for protection and prosperity. This photograph encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of our shared human experiences: hope amidst uncertainty and unity through diversity.
