EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of daily life in Kogelo, Kenya, the ancestral home of former U. S. President Barack Obama. In this image, a group of boys can be seen walking home for lunch from school in the picturesque village. The photograph was taken on July 16,2015, just before President Obama's visit to Kenya and Ethiopia later that month. Kogelo is not only known for being the birthplace of Obama's father but also as the residence of his step-grandmother, Sarah Hussein Obama. The village boasts various landmarks such as an open-pit goldmine, a pork butcher shop, and an outdoor market where locals gather to trade goods. Transportation in Kogelo primarily consists of motorbike taxis or traveling by foot. Water is transported using donkey-carts—a traditional method still prevalent in many rural areas across Africa. Interestingly enough, some children in Kogelo have been named "Obama" in honor of their most famous son who went on to become the first African-American president of the United States. Through this powerful image captured by photographer Thomas Mukoya for Reuters Images' Wider Image series titled "Kogelo, Kenya - Obamas Ancestral Home" we catch a glimpse into everyday life within this close-knit community steeped in history and pride.
