Marie Curie and students, 1910s C014 / 2053
Marie Curie and students. Polish-French physicist and chemist Marie Curie (centre, 1867-1934) was born Marya Sklodowska in Poland, moving to Paris, France, in 1891. She studied at the Sorbonne, marrying Pierre Curie in 1895. Together, they worked on the radioactivity discovered by Becquerel, and with him they shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics. As part of this work, they had discovered two new elements, polonium and radium. This led to Marie receiving the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This photograph, dating from around the period 1910 to 1915, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USAs earliest news picture libraries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Marie Curie surrounded by her students in the early 1910s. Known as a Polish-French physicist and chemist, Marie Curie's legacy is deeply rooted in her groundbreaking discoveries and unwavering dedication to science. Born Marya Sklodowska in Poland, she ventured to Paris, France in 1891 where she pursued her studies at the prestigious Sorbonne. It was there that she met Pierre Curie, whom she married in 1895. Together, they embarked on a scientific journey exploring radioactivity alongside Becquerel, leading them to jointly receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. Their research also unveiled two new elements: polonium and radium. This significant breakthrough led Marie Curie to become the first woman ever awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. In this historic photograph taken between 1910 and 1915 by Bain News Service, we witness Marie Curie standing at the center of an accomplished group of students. With their eyes fixed on her with admiration and respect, it is evident that she not only excelled as a scientist but also served as an exceptional teacher. Marie Curie's contributions have left an indelible mark on both physics and chemistry fields. Her pioneering spirit continues to inspire generations of scientists around the world today.
